Tomahawk Pedal Crank Spindle Bearing Replacement

  1. First of all remove one of the crank cotter pins. If one is tight try the other side. You only need to remove one.

As you will see from the photo I had to drill the one on the bike shown in the picture. It would not come out by pressing it or knocking it out with a hammer.

  2. Once the cotter pin is out slide off the pedal crank. This will expose one of the circlips. Remove the circlip, then slide out the crank spindle, this will then leave the 2 old cast spindle bearings remaining in the frame.

  3. Place a drift through one bearing to knock out the adjacent bearing. Once the first bearing in out, place the drift in the opposite side and knock the second bearing from the frame.

  4. After cleaning out the bottom frame tube (crank spindle housing) install the new bearings. Push in by hand than press completely home using a large G Clamp.

  5. Clean and grease the old Spindle and slide into the new bearings.

  6. Once in position replace the circlip into the grove in the crank spindle.

  7. Replace the crank and insert a new cotter pin and tighten the nut.

Items to note:

  • You will need to remove the chain guard and the chain before starting.

You may find the crank spindle worn also. If this needs replacing, both the crank arms will require to be removed and a new spindle installed.
