               RALEIGH FACTORY ON MOVE

                                                     100-year history ends
    RALEIGH is moving out of its Nottingham factory after more than 100 years, it was announced today. 
 The University of Nottingham is buying the site as an extension to its Jubilee campus.
   Raleigh is now looking for a "brownfield" site for a purpose built assembly and painting plant and home for its sister company Sturmey Archer.
 It has up to four years to move out of the 21-acre site. The 600 strong workforce at Raleigh were told of the plans today by new managing director Phillip Darnton.
 He said: "This will allow us to become more cost-effective and competitive."
 Mr Darnton, who took over on Tuesday, said the move was an opportunity to produce more bikes - it plans to assemble 520,000 this year.
 "It is not a job-shedding exercise by any means. Old buildings such as those we have occupied for decades are no longer appropriate in today's production processes," added Mr Darnton.
 "The offer we have received is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Raleigh."
 Raleigh has started talks with the city council to find a suitable site to lease.
